DLC teacher Paul Stinson travelled to Portugal at the end of October to attend and present at the Science on Stage Festival 2019. He was part of only four delegates from Canada who qualified for the national delegation, sharing his presentation on cardboard origami microscopes.

Science on Stage brings together science teachers to exchange teaching ideas and concepts with 450 colleagues from over 30 countries. The goal is to find the best ways to improve science teaching and to encourage more students to consider a career in science or engineering by motivating and educating their teachers.

As a distance learning teacher, Mr. Stinson was faced with the challenge of finding a low-cost, portable solution for students to explore the hidden world of cells and micro-organisms. The solution was a foldscope – a cardboard origami microscope that uses a glass bead as a magnifier. The low-tech solution allows for a flexible and durable device but can also be connected to digital technology to facilitate sharing and collaborating with others in an online community.

His project, ‘Magnifying Curiosity… Sharing Science’ was selected to present as a workshop during the festival. Congratulations Mr. Stinson!
