Student waste audit

Have you ever wondered how much garbage your family throws away? DLC grade 8 student, Savannah, was curious and wanted to do something about it. She decided to perform a waste audit and try to find ways to reduce. "I want to see how much garbage we throw out on a daily basis in our home. This week I’m doing a Waste Audit.

ething about it. She decided to perform a waste audit and try to find ways to reduce.

"I want to see how much garbage we throw out on a daily basis in our home.

This week I’m doing a Waste Audit.

Basically a waste audit means to sort your garbage to see how much is really garbage versus compostable or recyclable. So I sorted my garbage into 4 categories: 1 is plastic, 2 is organic, 3 is paper, and 4 is other.

Every day I sort my garbage into the 4 categories, then I will weigh it, and by the end of the week I think of a way to reduce my garbage for the upcoming week. For example, composting all my organic waste. In the following week I’ll sort and weigh my garbage while compositing my organic material to see how much my garbage has reduced overall."

Mr. Stinson and the DLC are proud of Savannah for taking steps to make our world a better place. Great work Savannah! If you are interested in exploring an extra-curricular environmental activity with the DLC contact DLChelp@sunwestsd.ca for more information.
