2022 DLC graduation ceremony

On June 10th we held our annual DLC graduation ceremony in Kenaston. Congratulations to all of our DLC graduates! Twenty-three students were able to join us—virtually and in person—from all over the province to attend the ceremony.

This year's valedictorian, Justine Willis, reflected on her time with the DLC and how it's given her the skills to confidently forge ahead into her future. Great job Justine!

Did you know there are approximately 73,000 tree species all around the world? Yeah, this number shocked me too, especially when I heard that nearly 10,000 species have not yet been discovered. So, if there are 73,000 species of trees that grow, produce leaves or fruit at different rates, why has there only been one learning style for so many decades? Life is not a one-size-fits-all, just like my 8 1/2 shoe size won’t fit everyone in this room. Like trees, children grow and learn at different speeds. That is what makes the DLC so special. Being a student with Sun West means that you do not have to conform to fit the one-size-fits-all mentality. Instead, we are able to each thrive.

“I have been able to create a schedule that meets my needs and I learned to reach out when I had a question. These skills are crucial and will stay with me every day for the rest of my life, wherever it may take me.”

Now before I forget and start rambling about more nature facts, I want to say congratulations class of 2022. We made it! It has been one heck of a ride with its ups and downs, but in the end, we made it here today. We should all be proud of our achievements that have led us to check another box off our list of accomplishments. It’s amazing to think that there is a learning style that allowed each of us to complete our high school from wherever we liked, whether it has been from the comfort of our home, a school building, or a location abroad. All our paths in the end have led us here to celebrate this milestone together.

Another big thank you to our parents, teachers, and staff members that have helped us get here today. I’m sure I speak for all my classmates when I say that all your continuous support and motivation encouraged us not to give up.

My journey with the DLC first began in grade 6. This was the first time I realized learning is different for every individual. Since then, I have continued my online learning journey in grade 8, 9, 11, and 12. In the end, I have always come back to Sun West because it is where I learn best. I have been able to create a schedule that meets my needs and I learned to reach out when I had a question. These skills are crucial and will stay with me every day for the rest of my life, wherever it may take me.

Oprah Winfrey once said, “Follow your passion. It will lead you to your purpose”. This is the message I encourage all my classmates to take with them as we continue to grow our roots. Just like all the different tree species, each of us are choosing the direction we take the rest of our lives. Some of us will keep going to school, others will join the family business. Maybe you will take a year off or get a job. Whatever your plans are, follow your passion and it will lead you to your purpose.

Once again congratulations, and I can’t wait to see where each of our journey’s takes us. Thank you.
