If you think you’ll be reading about cactus plants in Book Club, you’re in for a surprise! Dusti Bowling’s Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus is "an inspiring story about three teens with serious disabilities forming an unlikely friendship as they struggle to cope with everyday life. Sometimes the friends you make aren’t the ones you expected. And sometimes the place you find yourself in isn’t the place you were hoping for. And sometimes, if you keep an open mind, you’ll find they’re so much better than you imagined.”

Here's what you need to know:

  • DLC Students in Grade 6, 7, 8, and 9 are invited to participate in the October Book Club
  • Book Club will be run by DLC teachers Miss. Ives and Mrs. Dyrland
  • Book Club will meet every Wednesday in October from 1PM - 2PM virtually on Teams (October 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th)
  • There will be optional activities to complete that may help you achieve some academic outcomes in ELA, Health, and/or Social Studies

How do I sign up?

To sign up, send an email by end of day on Friday October 1st to either teachers at stephanie.ives@sunwestsd.ca or patricia.dyrland@sunwestsd.ca with "Book Club" in the subject line. Be sure to include the following in your sign up email:

  • Your name
  • Your grade
  • The email address you use for Microsoft Teams (if you have never used Teams before, let us know and we can get you set up)
  • Your parent’s email address

When you submit your sign up, Miss. Ives and Mrs. Dyrland will help you track down a copy of the book so you have one before the first Club meet-up; there are hardcopy options as well as online copies to access. We hope to see you soon!
